Upgraded connects healthcare startups with homecare providers in the TEKNO-Project

Upgraded - the Health Startup Association of Finland has been an active implementer in the TEKNO-Project. Here is a brief summary of what Upgraded has been doing so far together with the TEKNO-Project in 2018.

Structural changes in social and healthcare industry caused by the aging population and the growing emphasis on self-directed care, puts pressure on the technology expertise and on service production companies in the healthcare field. It is utmost important that the healthcare professionals and social workers have a sufficient level of knowledge of existing technological solutions and the expertise to guide customers in the use of technology. TEKNO – Smooth Expertise in Health and Well-being Technology -project aims to increase the expertise of health and well-being technology especially for professionals (e.g. home care, home hospital, elderly people's homes, service centers) and to boost knowledge, skills and know-how for individuals as smart citizens with technology.

One of the goals of the TEKNO-Project is also to support startup entrepreneurs working within the fields of health and well-being. Upgraded has been actively working towards this goal, by creating awareness of startup companies’ solutions and by enhancing the networking opportunities between them and other entrepreneurs and healthcare professionals, as well as larger entities providing healthcare services.

In the spring 2018, the TEKNO-Project and Upgraded together with 12 startups created educational videos presenting their technological solutions. These videos are now available on the virtual welfare and healthcare technology platform. The videos will serve as promotion for the technological solutions available and also educate about these new technologies and products. The videos can also be found at the Upgraded YouTube -channel, in the TEKNO-Project playlist. Feel free to share the videos and spread the word!

During the past year, Upgraded has been part of organising two TEKNO-events, so called “Tekno-tärskyt” (eng. “Tekno-meetup”). The main goal of these events were to increase networking between the different parties in the fields of health and well-being, and to give opportunities in familiarizing with the available technologies first hand.

One of the Tekno-meetups was held at Upgraded Life Festival on the 31st of May, providing simultaneously the attendees a chance to get a glance of the health tech scene on a broader scale. In the Tekno-meetup, startups working with home care and rehabilitation, such as VideoVisit, PeiliVision, Sanoste and Overvahoiva met with other private entrepreneurs and small business owners working in healthcare, physiotherapy, homecare and social work, within the Uusimaa region. Larger companies as well as the public sector, including services for rehabilitation and assisted living, also joined the networking.

Lunch meetup between startups and a homecare delegation from the Netherlands

In May, the Tekno-Project had the honor to organize a meetup between startups and a homecare delegation from the Netherlands. The high level delegation from the Netherlands included executive level stakeholders from diverse companies concentrating on the elderly care and housing as well as ex-politicians from the the Ministry of Health, Welfare & Sports.

The aim was to enhance international relationships and to get valuable insights about the similarities and differences in the markets. The startups who took part in the meeting (Physilect, Beat2Phone, Popit, Sanoste and PeiliVision) saw the event as a great opportunity for international networking and also the delegation members from the Netherlands were very pleased with the interesting new products and contacts. Discussions continue and we hope to see active collaboration between the Dutch and Finnish home care innovations in the future!

Dutch high level delegation of homecare stakeholders visited startups involved in TEKNO in a lunch meetup at the startup center Maria 01 in May 2018.

The TEKNO-project continues until the beginning of 2019! If you’re startup or entrepreneur with a solution for home care or rehabilitation, or a healthcare professional or individual interested in healthcare technologies, please be in contact by sending an email to info@upgraded.fi. We’re glad to have you involved!

The TEKNO-project is a joint effort of Laurea University of Applied Sciences, Posintra Oy, Upgraded and Vantaan Invalidit. The project is primarily funded by the European Social Fund ESF.
